Nasopharyngeal cancer is a malignant tumor that develops in the nasopharynx. The nasopharynx is the area where the back part of your nose opens into your upper throat. This is also where tubes from your ears open into your throat. The nasopharynx is precariously placed at the base of your skull, above the roof of your mouth. Your nostrils open into the nasopharynx. When you breathe, air flows through your nose into your throat and nasopharynx, and eventually into your lungs.
In many cases, nasopharyngeal cancers get quite large before patients become aware of symptoms. The exact symptoms depend on where the tumor is located, how large it has gotten and whether it has spread before being detected.
